The Barefoot Traveler was started in 1997 as a way for me to share my love of the Ozark Mountains with the internet community. It was originally part of the companion site www.ozarkconnections.com ( begun in 1995) which was the first website on the internet to present specific information about the Ozark Mountains of Northwest Arkansas and the Buffalo National River Park. Ozarkconnections.com was the static information and The Barefoot Traveler was the content that changed every few weeks with a new hike or review.
About Me
In 2010 I had a significant knee injury that had pretty much ended my hiking and bushwhacking adventures. My friends asked me to start it up again, doing reviews and simple hikes so in 2015 I started a major upgrade to this site. I took the current information on the old barefoottraveler.com site and posting it here with a nice cosmetic upgrade. In 2016 I began to slow down due to a bad left knee but in 2017 I had a total knee replacement which has worked well since then. In 2018 both my long term hiking friends David Farmer and Alf Carter passed away. One of the activities that made doing this site fun was getting out and spending time with my friends. I still continue to get out with my long time friend and hiking buddy Bill Amburn and sometimes by myself but not as often as in "The Old Days." In April 2022 I contracted a case of Bell's Palsy and the right side of my face became somewhat nonoperational. My right eye was particularly affected and made it very difficult to use the computer for any length of time. In November 2022 I had an MRI which showed a severe case of cervical stenosis. It had progressed quite far and by late February 2023 I had an appointment with the spine guys at Washington Regional Medical Center. I will be having surgery to correct this problem in mid April. My understanding is that I will be under severe restrictions as to what I will be allowed to do. At this same time I have been diagnosed with a growth on my right interior eyelid. Due to the neck issue this problem has been somewhat difficult to resolve, but I hope to be able to resume writing these articles at some point.
Update July 10, 2023 - I continue to recover from cervical fusion surgery. My 90 day checkup is late July and I am hoping for another good report. The vision in my right eye is improving daily and I am hoping to get out the camera again in a week or two.
Update October 23, 2023 - My neck has completely healed up and I am cleared to resume normal activities. I still have two other issues to resolve before I am 100%. The first is my eye. It still is not correct. Also I have a bone injury to my right (main) hand that will require surgery to fix. Currently it is swollen but I am trying to gimp through till after the holidays.
Update July 14, 2024 - I have had more eye surgery and it might actually be getting a bit better. I had the hand surgery on December 28, 2023. On my last report the doctor said there was still a small gap in one area that had not yet fused. I am hoping for a better report next time.
